Application Process for Master of Arts in Religiou
Your application is complete when all materials have been received.
Write a statement of intent and purpose (minimum of about 300 words). This is an opportunity for you to clearly express why you wish to enter the degree program or take a limited number of courses. (For those for whom English is a second language this is also an opportunity to demonstrate proficiency at written English.)
Three recommendations are required. These provide information from people who are familiar with your academic ability and/or your involvement with the New Church. These include:
A recommendation (PDF) from an instructor who has taught you an academic subject. (Give him or her the enclosed form.) If you have not attended an institution of higher education recently, please contact the dean of the Theological School.
A New Church clergy recommendation (PDF) to provide information on your knowledge of and involvement in the New Church. (Give the minister the enclosed form.) If you do not know a New Church minister, please contact the dean of the Theological School.
A personal recommendation (PDF) from anyone who can attest to your knowledge of and affirmative attitude towards the Heavenly Doctrines.
Request official academic records (transcripts) to be sent to the Theological School from each institution of higher education which you have attended.
Students for whom English is not a first language are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). (This can be waived if fluency can be demonstrated. Please contact the dean for further information.) The results should be sent to the Academy of the New Church (code number 2002). There are many places where the test is given. If you do not know of one near you, ask for a TOEFL Bulletin by writing or calling:
TOEFL Program Director
P.O. Box 6151
Princeton, NJ 08541-6151 USA
Phone (609) 771-7100
Students should take the TOEFL at least 3 months prior to the term in which they hope to begin classes.
Include $30 U.S. funds payable to the Academy of the New Church for processing applications. Late applications should include an additional $20.
Application for financial aid is restricted to full time students, awarded in the order in which applications are received. Because of limited financial aid funds, admission to the masters program does not guarantee financial aid.
